An hour later, he and Rico stood outside. The wrap-up was well underway. Rico and his DEA liaison had interviewed the dealer they’d arrested at length before putting him into a DEA SUV to send back for processing. The huge haul of cocaine and fentanyl was still being recorded before being transported to the district office.

While they waited, Jack decided that now was as good a time as any to talk to Rico about Emily. “Hey, bro, I’ve been wanting to tell you something.”

Rico raised an eyebrow. “This sounds serious.”

Jack gave him a lopsided smile. “It is. Emily and I are sleeping together now, and I’ve never been happier.”

Now both of Rico’s brows went up. “Whoa, brother. That’s awesome!” He grinned at Jack and slapped him on the back. “I’m happy for you, man. It’s about time you found a good woman. You’ve been alone too long.”

Jack told Rico about Emily’s reservations, but added that he didn’t share them. “I think as long as we talk things out between us, we’ll be fine.”

Rico nodded. “That’s the most important thing. Talking wasn’t so big with you and Sarah, if I remember correctly.”

Jack nodded. “You’re right, and I won’t let that happen again.”

Rico’s DEA liaison stuck his head out of the front door and called to him.

Jack walked down to the end of the driveway for some privacy and put in a call to Emily. “Hey, how are you and Lily doing?”

He felt himself warming inside as Emily told him about their morning.

“So, how’s your day shaping up?” she asked.

This was his third day away from home, and he was missing her something awful. “We had a big break in the case this morning. Looks like I’ll be home tonight. I don’t know how early it’ll be, so you don’t have to wait up.”

“Oh, Jack, I can’t wait to see you. Wake me when you get in if it’s really late.”

Just thinking about seeing her again made his pulse begin to race. “Are you sure?”

“Honey, I’ve never been more sure of anything,” she said in a sultry voice.

His heart pounded, and a smile wreathed his face. She’d never used an endearment with him before. “I’ll do that then, sweetheart. I’m looking forward to seeing you, too. And believe me when I say that’s an understatement.”

She laughed. “See you tonight, handsome.”

Heart still racing, he disconnected the call. God, he couldn’t wait to get home.
